It’s hard enough for a regular person to get a doctorate degree—but there are quite a few celebrities who made their way to the top of the academic food chain before, or sometimes even after, they got famous…and there are some surprising names on the list.
Sir Brian May
He may be best known as the lead guitarist of Queen, but Sir Brian May also holds a PhD in—of all things—astrophysics from Imperial College London.

Robert Vaughn
Robert Vaughn was an Old Hollywood stalwart whose career lasted nearly six decades, best known for roles in The Magnificent Seven, Bullitt, and The Man from UNCLE. In 1970, while in his late 30s, he got his PhD in communications for a thesis on the practice of blacklisting in American theater during the era of the HUAC. It’s been lauded for how “complete and intelligent” it is.

The bestselling author of Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, and Congo also has a Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard University, though he never got a license to practice medicine, instead focusing on his writing.

Ken Jeong
Before he came to prominence in The Hangover and Community, actor and comedian Ken Jeong was a medical doctor, having received his MD from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. But in contrast to his comedic work, Jeong was super serious when he was a practicing doctor, saying, “I would bark orders to my nurses. I was hard-core. […] I was perfectly trained to be a physician. You know, it wasn't a fluke. I worked hard at it”.

Jackie Fox
Talk about taking a walk on the wild side. Fox was a Merit scholar who’d already been accepted to early admission at UCLA when she got the opportunity to join the girls group the Runaways, the group that launched Joan Jett’s career. She played with the band for a few years and worked in the music industry before going back to school, eventually getting her JD from Harvard, studying alongside future President Barack Obama.

Speaking of law degrees, Fred Thompson doesn’t just play a lawyer on TV as DA Branch on Law & Order—he actually is one. Thompson has a JD from Vanderbilt, and was the United States Senator from Tennessee from 1994-2003.

Though his name may not sound familiar, 90s TV fans will remember Allen for his role as Matthew in Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman. And speaking of doctors, Allen has his PhD in clinical psychology from Antioch University New England in New Hampshire.

The Canadian actor appeared in a handful of comedies throughout the 90s and 2000s, including Happy Gilmore, Saving Silverman, and Rat Race. Van Snellenberg also has a PhD in psychology from Columbia University, where he performed functional neuroimaging research with schizophrenia patients.

Miller was a fixture in the British comedy and theater scene, and became famous as a performer in the Beyond the Fringe comedy troupe alongside Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. But before that, he got a medical degree in the UK, called an MBBChir, from the University of Cambridge.

Haing S Ngor
The story of Haing S Ngor is absolutely heartbreaking. Ngor was born in Cambodia, and got his MD from the University of Toulouse. He practiced as an OB-GYN in Cambodia before the rise of the Khmer Rouge—after which he had to hide his education and work due to the regime’s hostility toward intellectuals. He was eventually put in a concentration camp, where his wife died during childbirth.
After escaping, he was cast in The Killing Fields, a role for which he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, the first actor of Asian descent to win the award. Sadly, in 1996, he was killed outside his home in Los Angeles.
