There are a lot of different reasons why someone would choose to stop eating meat. Humans, after all, are omnivores, so our bodies are designed to process both plant and animal proteins for nutrition. Going vegetarian can be a moral choice, a health choice, or some combination of the two. Here are some celebrities, old and new, who have adopted a plant-based diet.
Ariana Grande
The former Nickelodeon star and singer of “Break Free” and “Bang Bang” has been a vegetarian from an early age. Grande began her path as a vegetarian due to a deep love of animals and wanting to reduce cruelty to the creatures. Citing health and longevity, she took the step to become a vegan in 2013.
Elliot Page
Acclaimed Canadian actor and activist, the Umbrella Academy star has been a long-time supporter of PETA. He won their Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity award in 2014. Page is also a tireless voice for transgender rights.
Natalie Portman
The Academy Award-winning Black Swan actor is a vocal vegan and vegetarian activist. Portman produced the documentary Eating Animals and continues to question the effect a non-vegetarian diet has on human health and the environment.
Fred Rogers
Beloved children’s television presenter and creator of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Fred Rogers was an early celebrity adopter of vegetarianism. Switching to a pescatarian (fish-only) diet in the 1970s, Rogers became a vegetarian in the 1980s, as he disliked the idea of eating anything that had a mother.
Shania Twain
This Canadian country music superstar attributes her health and vitality to her vegetarian lifestyle. Twain maintains a carbohydrate-free diet, and sticks to a lot of raw and whole foods to maintain the energy associated with her best-selling albums.
Travis Barker
The Blink-182 drummer has been a vegan since 2009. Barker’s energetic drumming style is fuelled by what he calls the “endless amounts of energy” he has since adopting a plant-based diet.
Billie Eilish
Pop singer Billie Eilish became vegan when she became aware of the cruel and unsustainable practices in the meat industry. Eilish’s veganism isn’t just diet related either. She collaborated with Nike to produce vegan footwear and has launched a vegan perfume.
Benedict Cumberbatch
The MCU’s master of magic switched to a plant-based diet in order to get in shape for his role as Dr. Strange. Cumberbatch has explicitly referred to himself as a vegan in multiple interviews, noting that he avoids anything animal-based, including eggs.
Sia
A relatively-recent vegan, pop singer Sia is a supporter of PETA, appearing in their campaign against animal homelessness. She also famously appeared in a Scooby Doo cartoon and offered resident foodies Shaggy and Scooby a vegan sandwich.
Colin Kaepernick
This former San Francisco 49ers quarterback drew national attention for his Civil Rights protests during his football career. Kaepernick was also a vegan during this time, and has a vegan “ice cream” from Ben and Jerry’s named Change the Whirled.
Ruby Rose
Famed for playing the title role in Batwoman for its first season, Ruby Rose became a vegan after finding out how shark fin soup is made. Choosing a plant-based diet for moral reasons, Rose revealed that she would have nightmares of finless sharks that prompted her move to veganism.
Will.I.Am
While many make the move to a plant-based diet for ethical reasons, Black Eyed Peas member Will.I.Am cites health concerns for his move to veganism. A doctor’s visit revealed high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Will.I.Am credits his 2017 switch to a vegan diet with helping keep his health worries in check.
Miley Cyrus
The “Wrecking Ball” singer is not afraid to be outspoken about her views, including her vegan lifestyle. After the death of a beloved pet, Cyrus decided to switch to a vegan way of life, and stopped using animal-based products altogether. She is a vocal promoter of veganism, and often shares these views through interviews and social media.
Kevin Smith
Best known as the indie director of Clerks, and the silent partner in Jay and Silent Bob, filmmaker Smith switched to a vegan diet after a heart attack in 2018. Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn suggested he go plant-based to lose weight, a choice he credits with saving his life and helping him lose his unhealthy weight.
Evanna Lynch
Best known for her role as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter franchise, Lynch has been a vegetarian since a very young age. Citing ethical reasons for her choice, Lynch could not get past the idea that “someone had been killed” for her food. She became a vegan in 2015 after educating herself on what it means to have an animal-based diet in the modern world.
Rob Zombie
Musician and film director Rob Zombie is well-known for his horror-inspired albums and his bloody films. In his personal life, however, Zombie has been a vegetarian since he was 18, finding the cruel treatment of animals in factory farming “brutal and disgusting.” He is now a vegan, and practices an animal product-free lifestyle.
Kat Von D
The internationally-known tattoo artist and entrepreneur is a long-standing vegetarian. Von D’s cosmetics company, Kat Von D Beauty, produces vegan-only beauty products. Von D made a switch from vegetarianism to veganism after watching the documentary Forks Over Knives.
Theo Rossi
The Sons of Anarchy star credits his close relationship with animals throughout his life for his early choice to become a vegan. As someone who had, and continues to have, many pets, Rossi couldn’t condone a lifestyle that entailed cruelty and killing toward animals.
Chloë Grace Moretz
Best-known for her acclaimed role as Hit Girl in the superhero film Kick Ass, Moretz says that becoming a vegetarian was one of the best decisions she ever made. Well, sort of. While she is dairy-free and mostly plant-based, she does admit to eating fish, making her a pescatarian.
Tobey Maguire
Former Spider-Man Tobey Maguire has been a vegetarian since the early 1990s. In the early 2000s he made the decision to become a vegan, noting that even as a child he had had a “difficult time” with meat-based dishes. His veganism extends to clothing and other products, as well as his dietary choices.
Mayim Bialik
Big Bang Theory and Blossom star Mayim Bialik is well-known for her outspoken and highly-articulate views. Bialik has been a vegan for many years, and has posted videos to her popular Youtube channel explaining her reasons for adopting a plant-based lifestyle.
Leonardo da Vinci
Jumping waaaay back in time, the Mona Lisa painter and renowned renaissance man da Vinci was known for his love of animals. Experts speculate that this likely also involved a vegetarian diet. As part of his obvious love for animals, da Vinci is also said to have purchased caged birds just to set them free.
Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell, known for her starring roles in Veronica Mars, The Good Place, and the Bad Moms films, is a long-time vegetarian. As a child, Bell was not fond of the smell or taste of meat, prompting an early adoption of a plant-based diet. Later in life, she became a vegan to avoid any animal cruelty in her life.
Dan Castellaneta
While many may not recognize Dan Castellaneta’s face, he has been the voice of Homer Simpson since the early days of the cartoon on The Tracey Ullman Show. Vegetarianism is a part of Castellaneta’s healthy lifestyle, which also includes being drink-free and regularly practicing tai chi.
Dianna Agron
Best-known for her role as cheerleader Quinn Fabry on the musical television series Glee, Dianna Agron is also an accomplished singer and director. A vegetarian, Agron claims the benefits of the lifestyle have helped her keep up in Hollywood. She is also an anti-animal cruelty advocate, having worked with animal rights organization PETA.
Peter Dinklage
The acclaimed Game of Thrones actor was a vegetarian for 15 years before switching to veganism in 2014. An advocate against animal-cruelty, Dinklage appeared in a PETA video comparing the animals in factory farms to the animals that share our homes as pets. An ethical vegan, Dinklage works against the “pain and fear” factory-farmed animals are subject to.
Betty White
Beloved Golden Girl Betty White was a lifelong animal lover, a love that eventually expanded to a vegetarian lifestyle. As an actor, White was dynamic and full of energy even in her later years, and she credited giving up meat as a part of the reason. White was an active supporter of numerous animal rights groups.
Rainn Wilson
Film and television star Rainn Wilson, best known as Dwight on The Office, partially credits having two pet pigs for his shift to veganism. Noticing health benefits after trying a vegan diet for a month, Wilson also realized the environmental benefits and completely shifted to a plant-based lifestyle.
Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton is a world champion Formula 1 driver, and has been a long-time advocate of a plant-based diet. Hamilton encourages his social media followers to investigate the lifestyle and give up products that exploit animals. He has also helped found the fast food restaurant Neat Burger, a plant-based chain in the UK.
Drew Barrymore
It might be surprising from a celebrity who played a flesh-eating zombie in Santa Clarita Diet, but Drew Barrymore is a long-time vegetarian. Her plant-based lifestyle extends to being active in the animal rights movement, as well as ensuring that all cosmetics in her Flower Beauty line are cruelty-free.
Joaquin Phoenix
Acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix has been a vegan for most of his life. The Walk the Line and Joker actor is a supporter of PETA, and works to end animal cruelty. Phoenix cites an early experience in life seeing a fish cruelly killed for food as spurring his early decision to pursue a plant-based, cruelty-free lifestyle.
Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood is a bonafide country superstar, traveling the world entertaining legions of fans. She managed to cut meat out of her diet in her early 20s, and does her best to follow a vegan lifestyle. Underwood admits that, as a celebrity that travels the world, it is sometimes difficult to maintain her veganism, but she does her best.
Trixie Mattel
Internationally-famous drag queen Trixie Mattel rose to fame as a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race. As well as being a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, Mattel has tweeted to followers a claim of vegetarianism a few times.
Olivia Wilde
Olivia Wilde is known for being both an accomplished actor and a great beauty. Wilde credits her veganism with contributing to her physical health and wellness, and has been a vegan since early in life. She also notes that veganism is not always an easy choice, and having a good support system is vital to pursuing a healthy plant-based lifestyle.
Paul McCartney
Often considered one of the greatest musicians of the modern era, Paul McCartney has been a vegetarian since the mid 1970s. Both he and his late wife Linda were outspoken animal rights activists. McCartney continues to be a supporter of PETA, as well as numerous other animal rights groups.

Reality television and Baywatch megastar Pamela Anderson has been a vegan for over 30 years. Anderson is a vocal animal rights advocate and has appeared in multiple campaigns for animal rights group PETA. In an Instagram post, Anderson has even claimed “Vegans make better lovers”!
George Harrison
Like fellow-Beatle Paul McCartney, George Harrison was a vegetarian. He beat his musical collaborator to the punch by about a decade, becoming a vegetarian in the 1960s after becoming interested in the Hindu yoga tradition.
Michelle Pfeiffer
Another acclaimed actor with a lengthy career who attributes much of her health and vitality to a vegan diet, Michelle Pfeiffer is most-recently best known for her role as Janet Van Dyne in the MCU film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
