Goodbye Hollywood, Hello Freedom
Hollywood status comes with a price. And while most celebrities can handle the stress that the entertainment industry may bring, others take the opportunity to back out when they can—retiring earlier than we’d expect.
Some of these celebs stuck it out for decades, while others bowed out gracefully only a few films in.
Either for personal reasons or health reasons, all of these stars are now officially retired from Hollywood. Let’s find out who—and why.
Daniel Day-Lewis
Daniel Day-Lewis is often described as one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema.
He received numerous accolades throughout his four-decade long career, including three Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Golden Globe Awards.
So, why did he quit?
Daniel Day-Lewis: Retirement
Day-Lewis had announced his retirement a few times during his career, but was often allured back by a big role. In 2017 he unexpectedly announced his retirement—for good.
He later told W Magazine, “I don’t know why it was different this time, but the impulse to quit took root in me, and that became a compulsion. It was something I had to do.”
Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz—who was once a staple on the silver screen—originally announced her retirement from acting in 2018.
But in 2023, she came back for one movie, the Netflix action comedy Back in Action. However, an incident on set changed her mind.
Cameron Diaz: Retirement
Diaz originally left Hollywood in exchange for a simpler life with her family. She wanted to focus on being a mother.
She was lured into coming back, but apparently instantly regretted her decision after witnessing a co-stars meltdown on set.
Whether or not that was the entire reason, Diaz has left once again, and says her life out of the spotlight is “the most fulfilling thing” that she’s ever done.
Michael J. Fox
Michael J. Fox began his career as a child in the 1970s and went on to win five Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award.

He served the industry for over 50 years before officially retiring in 2007. So, what influenced his decision?
Sean Connery: Retirement
Aside from having surgery for a kidney tumor, there is apparently another factor in Connery’s decision to retire.

Basically, it was all too much for him and that’s when he started to think seriously about his future.
Shelley Duvall
Shelly Duvall is known for her iconic roles in films like The Shining, and the 1980s Popeye. While both of those films were incredibly popular, Duvall ended up tapping out of the Hollywood lifestyle in 2002.
Her decision was sparked by several factors.
Shelley Duvall: Retirement
Duvall’s decision to leave Hollywood included both a diminishing selection of movie offers, as well as her brother’s spinal cancer diagnosis.

In 1996, her mother passed away after a year long battle with breast cancer. Wilson later recalled that this affected her passion for acting.

Eva Mendes: Retirement
Since her quiet departure in 2014, Mendes welcomes two daughters with partner Ryan Gosling. In her response to the fan asking where she’s been, she said, “As a mother now, there are many roles I won't do. There are many subject matters that I don't want to be involved with, so it limits my choices and I'm fine with that.”
Her preferences greatly limit her options. But she went on to reassure her fans, “No worries, I’ve got some side hustles going on.”
