2024 was a great year for movies—with streaming services netting $10 billion in revenue. Challengers
A strange love triangle set in the world of tennis, Challengers (2024), starring Zendaya, follows a love triangle between a pro tennis player-turned-coach, Tashi Donaldson, who transforms her husband from a casual player into a professional. Things get murky when one of his opponents is a former boyfriend of Donaldson. The comedy went 40-Love with viewers, grossing $50.1 million domestically.
Terrifier 3
Art The Clown returns in the third installment of the Terrifier (2016) horror/slasher series. Having survived the Halloween horrors of Art The Clown, Sienna and her brother are desperate to have a normal Christmas. But, just when they thought Art may have been vanquished, he returned for one of the most terrifying movies of the year. Terrifier 3 grossed $53.9 million domestically.
Joker: Folie À Deux
A deep dive into the psychology of The Joker from Batman, Joker: Folie A Deux (2024) details Joker's life inside Arkham State Prison where, imprisoned for the murder of five people, he meets and falls in love with fellow inmate, Harley Quinn, better known as "Lee". Lady Gaga plays Harley Quinn and Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as The Joker in this psychological thriller. Joker Folie À Deux grossed $58.3 million domestically.
Transformers One
Transformers One (2024) is an animated action flick that tells the origin story of the best friends-turned-bitter enemies, Optimus Prime and Megatron. Featuring the voice acting of Chris Pine, Scarlett Johansson, and Laurence Fishburne, Transformers One was in development for 10 years following Transformers: Age Of Extinction (2014). Despite being an animated departure from the live-action that Transformers fans are used to, the film still grossed $59.09 million domestically.
Anyone But You
Anyone But You (2024) performed unexpectedly well at the box office, despite mixed reviews from critics and being something of a dark horse. Loosely based on William Shakespeare's romantic play, Much Ado About Nothing (1598), Anyone But You received an end-year release in 2023 and was mostly shot in New South Wales, Australia. It became one of the highest-grossing romantic movies of 2024, grossing $63.4 million domestically.
The Beekeeper
Another year, another Jason Statham action movie. The Beekeeper (2024) might be one of Statham's best movies in recent memory. Action movies with lots of explosions are kind of his thing, but The Beekeeper saw Statham take on big corporations in a movie that went all the way to the top of the American government. Grossing $66.2 million domestically, a sequel is in the works, because of course it is.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
A departure from the Mad Max saga we're used to, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga tells the story of the Fury Road (2015) character, Furiosa. Stolen as a baby from the Great Plains Of Many Mothers, Furiosa must make her way back home through a land marred by war. Furiosa was named one of the Top Ten Films of 2024 by the National Board of Review and grossed $67.5 million domestically.
Civil War
A post-apocalyptic action thriller that may provide a scary glimpse into the future. Civil War, directed by Alex Garland tells the story of an unrecognizable United States, embroiled in a civil conflict, through the lenses of photojournalists. Starring Kirsten Dunst and Nick Offerman, Civil War was the dystopian thriller that nobody knew we needed and grossed $68.7 million domestically.
Smile 2
The sequel to the 2022 horror, Smile, which saw a therapist experience disturbing supernatural events following the death of a client, Smile 2 (2024) sees the supernatural Smile Entity follow Skye Riley, a young pop star about to embark on a tour that could change her life. Instead, strange things begin to happen and Skye's tour is plagued by the Smile Entity. Smile 2 grossed $69 million domestically.
Nosferatu
Another excellent horror movie of 2024 was Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 film, Nosferatu: A Symphony Of Horror—an adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Set in the early 19th century, a young girl named Ellen pleads for a supernatural being to cure her of her loneliness, unaware of the consequences of that wish, as a mysterious creature pledges himself to her for all eternity. Nosferatu received four nominations at the Academy Awards, mostly for hair and makeup. It grossed $69.2 million domestically.
Mean Girls
A 2024 remake of the 2004 classic by Tina Fey, Mean Girls (2024) follows the familiar plot line of a teenage girl in a new school, struggling to fit in with all the cliques and high school drama. The 2024 version of Mean Girls stars Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Chloe Cravalho and sees Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reappear from the 2004 original. Mean Girls was extremely well-received by critics and fans alike, predictably performing well: grossing $72.5 million domestically.
Migration
A surprise entry on our list from 2024 was the animated Universal flick, Migration. This duck-centric animation tells a comedic story of a flock of mallard ducks who try to convince their overprotective father to undertake a new migration journey: from New England, over New York, to the heat of Jamaica for the winter. Hilarious and heartwarming, Migration grossed $73.5 million domestically.
Longlegs
Starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, Longlegs is a police procedural horror film, following a police detective tasked with capturing a serial killer calling himself Longlegs in Oregon. Directed by Osgood Perkins and released by Neon films, it would gross $74.3 million domestically, becoming both Perkins' and Neon's highest-grossing film of all time.
Wonka
With a star-studded cast of Timothee Chalamet as Wonka, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Coleman, and Hugh Grant, Wonka tells the story of how Willy Wonka became the infamous chocolatier that we all know and love from Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (1971). Wonka was Timothee Chalamet's best film in years, grossing $85.4 million domestically.
The Garfield Movie
Everybody's favorite orange cat returned in 2024 with The Garfield Movie, directed by Mark Dindal. It's a movie about Garfield reuniting with his long-lost father, Vic—joining him on a high-stakes adventure, shoring up the bonds between father and son. The first Garfield movie in 15 years, Garfield fans flocked back to the theaters as the movie grossed $91.9 million domestically.
The Fall Guy
Based on the 1980 television series, The Fall Guy (2024) stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. The comedy sees Gosling's character, Colt Seavers, working on his ex-girlfriend's film as a stuntman—only to become embroiled in a conspiracy concerning the lead actor of the movie. The Fall Guy's star-studded cast must have helped the slapstick comedy, as it grossed a surprising $92.9 million domestically.
Red One
Taking Christmas to new levels, Red One is the first film in a to-be series of Christmas-themed action movies. It's not quite the greatest Christmas action movie ever (Die Hard), but Red One stars Dwayne Johnson, Lucy Liu, Chris Evans, and Nick Kroll and sees Callum Drift (Johnson) team up with computer hacker, Jack O'Malley (Evans), to locate a kidnapped Santa Claus. Red One grossed an incredible $96.96 million domestically.
Bob Marley: One Love
An incredible biographical drama telling the life of the great Bob Marley. Bob Marley: One Love tells the story of Marley's rise to fame from the 1970s until his death in 1981. Marley is played by British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, from Netflix's The OA (2019). Premiering in Marley's native Jamaica on January 23, 2024, Bob Marley: One Love grossed $96.98 million domestically.
Alien: Romulus
The latest in the Alien (1979) movie series, Alien: Romulus was one of the most anticipated films of 2024. Following the danger-ridden space exploration of six space explorers, Alien: Romulus did receive some criticism for the AI-generated Ian Holm and the overuse of nostalgia, but still performed well at the theaters, grossing $105.3 million domestically.
IF
A combination of live-action and animation sees Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski team up for IF. Following a young girl named Bea after experiencing the death of her grandmother, IF tells of her interactions with everyone else's imaginary friends, that she can now see as though they're real. Though not Reynolds or Krasinski's highest-grossing movie of 2024, IF was one of the highest-grossing animated/live-action combos of the year: scoring a domestic gross of $111.3 million.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Gil Kenan returns for another Ghostbusters flick. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was a sequel to the 2021 Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The movie sees veteran ghostbusters and the new team band together to save the world from a death-chilling ghost in New York, who has sinister plans for the world. Starring Paul Rudd, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, and Kumail Nanjiani, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire grossed $113.3 million domestically.
A Quiet Place: Day One
The prequel to the 2018 horror hit, A Quiet Place, A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) tells the story of how the world came to be gripped by creatures that prey on noise. Would you have been able to stay silent? Starring Lupita Nyong'o as the lead character, Day One grossed $139.05 million in North America.
Venom: The Last Dance
The sequel to Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and the third film in the Venom franchise, Venom: The Last Dance stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. The comedic take on Venom's character was a refreshing side to the franchise, with the movie grossing $139.7 million in North America.
The Wild Robot
The debut of The Wild Robot (2024) gave echoes of Wall-E: as an animated sci-fi movie, after a service robot is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island, the robot must connect with the world around it and forge new relationships with the local wildlife. The Wild Robot was a feel-good story that featured the voices of Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, and Mark Hammill. It grossed $143.2 million in North America.
Mufasa: The Lion King
Serving as both a prequel and sequel to The Lion King (2019), the entire movie is photorealistically animated and features the voices of Seth Rogen, Donald Glover, Beyonce, Thandiwe Newton, and Mads Mikkelson. Mufasa: The Lion King tells the story of Simba's father, told by Rafiki to Simba and Nala's daughter, Kiara. A huge hit among Lion King lovers old and new, Mufasa: The Lion King grossed $168.2 million domestically and was the seventh-highest grossing movie of 2024 worldwide.
Gladiator II
The highly-anticipated sequel to the epic Gladiator (2000) starring Russell Crowe was released last year. Starring Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Paul Mescal, Gladiator II sees the grandson of Marcus Aurelius, Lucius, come back to Rome as a prisoner of war-turned-slave-turned-gladiator, fighting for his freedom and, eventually, to realize his destiny as the emperor of Rome. Despite historians objecting to various inaccuracies in the film, Gladiator II grossed $168.8 million in North America.
Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes
The sci-fi thriller series is revived once again in Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, serving as a direct sequel to 2017's War For The Planet Of The Apes. Despite not having star power in the cast, with Owen Teague playing the lead role, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes still performed well in North America, grossing $171.1 million.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3
A direct sequel to Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022), Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was announced before the release of the second installment in the Sonic film franchise, but was delayed due to the 2023 writer's strike. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 sees Sonic and company team up to face Shadow and two mad scientists who are bent on destroying the Earth. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was one of the most successful animated films of the year, grossing $187.6 million in North America.
Bad Boys: Ride Or Die
The long-awaited next installment of Bad Boys, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die saw Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprise their roles as Miami detectives Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey who must clear the name of their former beloved Captain, Conrad Howard, after he is accused of conspiracy. Bad Boys: Ride Or Die grossed $193.5 million in North America.
Kung Fu Panda 4
Another animated sequel that performed brilliantly at the North American box office was Kung Fu Panda 4. Po returns to prominence and is chosen to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. Before he can enjoy his new role, Po must face off against an adversary, vying for the Staff of Wisdom. Kung Fu Panda 4 grossed $193.5 million in North America.
Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire
The latest entry in the Godzilla-Kong franchise, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is a sequel to Godzilla V Kong (2021) and sees Kong again unite with Godzilla to fend off an attack by the Skar King, who threatens to invade Earth. Lovers of either franchise and watchers of the first film flocked to the cinemas in North America, helping Godzilla X Kong to gross $196.8 million at the box office.
Twisters
A sequel to the 1996 classic, Twister, this film features a very similar plot line as the first one—storm-chasing, tornado-hunting enthusiasts in central Oklahoma—but with none of the star power of Helen Hunt or Bill Paxton. Twisters was much-anticipated by fans of the first movie and grossed $267.6 million in North America.
Dune: Part Two
Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two tells the story of Paul Atreides, who unites with the Fremen people to wage war in the desert against House Harkonnen. The much-anticipated sequel of one of the most successful sci-fi films ever, Dune: Part Two grossed $282.7 million in North America, and was named one of the Top Ten Films of the year by the American Film Institute.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
26 years in the making after Tim Burton's classic Beetlejuice (1988), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice follows Lydia Deetz as a struggling mother, eager to keep her family together. She enlists the help of Beetlejuice after her daughter, Astrid, is lost in the afterlife. One of the most anticipated sequels in modern movie history, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice grossed $294.1 million in North America.
Despicable Me 4
Old rivals seek revenge in Despicable Me 4. As Maxime Le Mal seeks vengeance against Gru and his family, they must deal with a new neighborhood and new life. With similar moments of humor, wit, and charm that Despicable Me fans have become accustomed to, Despicable Me 4 grossed an astonishing $361 million in North America.
Moana 2
Another top hit for animated movie fans was the sequel to 2016's Moana. A story about environmental justice and the fight for our world against climate change and corporatocracy, these themes are reprised in Moana 2. Female empowerment and identity also feature prominently, with Moana 2 being another incredibly popular animated film in 2024: grossing $425.2 million in North America.
Wicked
Based on the 1995 book by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is a reimagining of the tale of The Wizard of Oz, from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked follows Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch and her friend, Galinda, who would later become Glinda The Good. Wicked grossed $450.5 million in North America, making it the third-highest grossing film of 2024.
Deadpool & Wolverine
There was perhaps no bigger hit last summer than Deadpool & Wolverine. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular characters, the film is considered a sequel to Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018). With much hilarity, quick wit, and action, Deadpool and Wolverine are forced to team up to stop the Time Variance Authority from destroying the universe. The movie was the highest-grossing rated-R film of all time, the second-highest grossing film of all time, and the second-highest domestic gross of 2024, raking in an incredible $636.7 million.
And The Highest-Grossing Film Of 2024 Is...
Inside Out 2 was the highest-grossing film of the year. The nine-year wait for a sequel to one of the most popular animated movies ever came to an end last year, as Inside Out 2 was released. It follows the story of Riley's emotions as Riley grows, and they come into contact with new emotions—Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy. Conflicts between Riley's personified emotions are a feature of the film which surpassed the incredible popularity of its predecessor, grossing $652.9 million in North America. It also grossed $1.6 billion worldwide.
It Ends With Us Mired In Scandal, Allegations, And Controversy
Based on the 2016 best-selling romance novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover, It Ends With Us starred Blake Lively and Hasan Minhaj. It grossed $148.5 million domestically, but was not without controversy. Blake Lively sued director Justin Baldoni, accusing him and his production company of sexual harassment and intimidation. The film was roundly criticized for not addressing the film's themes of emotional abuse and domestic violence during its promotional tours. A counter-suit by Baldoni against Lively was lodged in late January 2025.
