Despite winning the National Book Critics Circle Award and being a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize that year, the eponymous 1991 adaptation starring Nicole Kidman, Dustin Hoffman, and Bruce Willis only made $15.5 million at the box office, despite costing $48.8 million to produce.
