The Worst Book-To-Movie Bomb At The Box Office
Billy Bathgate may not be a movie you've heard of—you may not even have heard of the book either. But Billy Bathgate (1989) is a novel by EL Doctorow that offers an exculpatory glance into the life of New York City mobsters, as a 15-year-old high-school dropout becomes the target of their recruitment and extortion. Despite winning the National Book Critics Circle Award and being a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize that year, the eponymous 1991 adaptation starring Nicole Kidman, Dustin Hoffman, and Bruce Willis only made $15.5 million at the box office, despite costing $48.8 million to produce.
