Veronica Lake's Hollywood Nightmare

In the long history of Hollywood heartbreaks, the story of Veronica Lake is still the most tragic. This screen siren became iconic for her icy blonde hair draped mysteriously over one eye, as well as for the frigid femme fatale characters she played on screen. Then, her life exploded in a blaze of infamy.

Her daughter went on trial for shooting her boyfriend. She lost her house to debts. She had a mental breakdown and piloted a plane solo from Los Angeles to New York in a fit of madness.

It turned out that inside the placid-looking Lake was a flame burning far too bright, and when her end came, it was quick and brutal.

Plenty of songs that dominated American radio that year have since slipped out of everyday pop culture, even though one chorus can still transport a whole generation straight back to the car radio.

One-Hit Wonders From The 1970s That Were Way Stranger Than You Remember

The 1970s gave American listeners disco, arena rock, singer-songwriters, punk, and an astonishing collection of records that sound as if they slipped past the gatekeepers when nobody was looking. For this list, “one-hit wonder” refers to acts remembered in the United States for one major Top 40 breakthrough, even when they enjoyed longer careers or greater success overseas. Once you revisit what some of these songs were actually about, the decade starts looking considerably stranger than the soft-focus nostalgia suggests.
