The Most Binge-Worthy TV Reboots

The Most Binge-Worthy TV Reboots

Usually, a TV show has to be pretty special to be worthy of a reboot after its original run has concluded. It requires some innovation and creative thinking to successfully reboot a TV show, but here are some of the most binge-worthy TV reboots in modern TV history.

Rss Thumb - Best Reboots

Fuller House

Fuller House (1987) featured the Tanner family in a family-friendly show that ran for eight years till 1995. The series was rebooted in 2016 for a five-season run and featured grown-up DJ Tanner, raising a young family with the help of her sister, Stephanie. Many of the original cast members of Fuller House, like Bob Saget and John Stamos, made cameo appearances.

Hawaii Five-O

The iconic cop show ran from 1968 to 1980, a thrilling police procedural set on the Big Island. Hawaii's premiere police show would return in 2010 and ran for 10 seasons until 2020, starring Scott Caan and Alex O'Loughlin. If you enjoyed Hawaii Five-O back in the 1970s, you'll likely enjoy the spectacular reboot—maybe enough to watch it all in one weekend.

The Conners

ABC audiences weren't sure at first how to respond to a reboot of Roseanne, with the fate of Barr's character confirmed in the first season of the new spin-off, which aired in 2018. The sitcom was recently renewed for a sixth season and features John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf as the steadfast, guiding hands of the family.

MacGyver

The original action-adventure series aired from 1985 to 1992 and featured the American military operative, MacGyver, escaping from a whole bunch of sticky situations, mostly with a comedic bend. Revived in 2016 with Jacob Till playing the eponymous character, MacGyver enjoyed a five-season run, before its conclusion in 2021.

Will And Grace

Running originally from 1998 to 2006, Will And Grace told the story of the relationship between two best friends, Will Truman and Grace Adler. The incredibly popular show was one of the most successful TV series in history, particularly for its portrayal of LGBT characters at the time. It earned 18 Emmys and 96 nominations. The revival in 2017 was immediately a smash hit—concluding its run in 2020.

One Day At A Time

Originally airing from 1975 to 1984, Netflix rebooted One Day At A Time in 2017 and originally ran it for just three seasons before pulling the plug. However, sharp backlash from fans over Netflix's decision resulted in the show being revamped again in March of 2020, but it was canceled again in December of that year. Nevertheless, One Day At A Time was a huge hit for Netflix television show wing while it lasted.

Battlestar Galactica

Deemed a "Star Wars rip-off" when it originally debuted in 1978, any such aspersions about Battlestar Galactica were cast away when the series was rebooted in 2003. It obtained a passionate cult following, perhaps due to the generational gap between those who watched the original series and those who'd not seen Star Wars. The New York Times named Battlestar Galactica "one of the best dramas since the Sopranos". High praise for a reboot.

American Idol

You might think, "Huh? Did that show ever end?" Yep! At least in its FOX-based run it did. Idol concluded on FOX in 2016 and was almost immediately picked up by ABC after two years off-air. Despite a new look with panel judges like Lionel Ritchie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan, the show is on its way to its 19th (or fourth) season, depending on how you view Idol canon.

The Comeback

One of the most ironic names on our list, The Comeback did indeed make a comeback. It originally aired in 2005, starring Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish—a young woman navigating Hollywood. Cherish and Kudrow made a—wait for it—comeback, in 2014, with the second season earning Kudrow a Primetime Emmy for Best Lead Actress.

iCarly

Most young girls loved iCarly when it was released in 2007. The teenage sitcom dealt with all the troubles of teenage life through the lens of main character Carly Shay and her gang of friends. Beavis And Butt-Head

The goofiness of Beavis And Butt-Head cannot be understated, but maybe that's why Mike Judge's creation is so beloved by most Americans. Airing for seven seasons on MTV until 2000, Beavis And Butt-Head has been rebooted twice: once in 2011 and again in 2022, when Paramount+ gave a green light to Mike Judge to produce two new series and a movie.

Raven's Home

A follow up to the iconic and popular That's So Raven that ran for four seasons, Raven's Home premiered in 2017 and catches up with Raven Symone, returning as Raven Baxter, a newly-single mother who raises her two children while living with her best friend from the original show, Chelsea.

The Twilight Zone

Bizarre—that's one word to describe The Twilight Zone, which was a sci-fi thriller-mystery that ran from 1959 to 1964, breaking all kinds of barriers that most hadn't seen on TV at the time. It was revived in 2019 and is hosted by Jordan Peele with guest appearances by Kumail Nanjani. It's earned a "Certified Fresh" score from Rotten Tomatoes.

A movie based on the original TV series was produced in 1983. During filming, serious concerns were raised about the safety of the crew on-set—but that wasn't all. The Twilight Zone had been using child actors (against child labor laws) and this was brought to light when two of them were killed in a helicopter accident in 1982. Director John Landis was blamed for the poor safety standards and the hiring of children.

Despite nobody being found criminally liable, the accident did force the introduction of new regulations in Hollywood surrounding the hiring of actors and actresses.
